Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge
This refuge was established to protect endangered and threatened waterbirds, including the koloa (Hawaiian duck), ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian coot), ‘alae ‘ula (Hawaiian moorhen), ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt) and nēnē (Hawaiian goose). In addition, these wetlands host a number of vagrant and migratory waterbirds.
To ensure the continued protection of the birds that live in Hanalei NWR, visitation of the refuge is limited to either viewing from the observation point along Kūhiō Highway or hiking on ʻŌkolehao Trail. Be sure to know and follow the refuge’s rules when visiting this important habitat.
Beginning April 30, 2024, a new viewpoint site will be available as the primary location for the public to visit the Hanalei NWR. This new site will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The viewpoint, a 5.4-acre parcel located along Kūhiō Highway in Princeville, includes two lookouts featuring views of the greater Hanalei Valley and Bay, Hanalei NWR, and Halele‘a Forest Reserve. Amenities include parking for 25 cars, short-term parking up to three small buses, interpretive displays, vault toilets, and native plantings that will provide residents and visitors with opportunities to learn about the natural and cultural history of the Hanalei Valley and Hanalei NWR.
